A tree in the way of a Newcastle retaining wall costs A$235 to ask about
By Artigellence ·
City of Newcastle's 2026/2027 fees and charges list the application fee for all private tree removal at A$235 for one to three trees, plus A$35 for each additional tree, with no GST. A permit is needed before clearing a tree 3 m or taller, or a single-trunk tree 15 cm or more in diameter measured 1.4 m above the ground. The drainage page covers the rest of what sits behind a wall, and the Retaining wall costs and rules check lists every line with its source.

What Council charges
Council's 2026/2027 schedule lists the application fee for all private tree removal at A$235 for one to three trees, plus A$35 for each additional tree over three, with no GST.
That is the fee to ask. It is not a quote for the work, and it does not say the permit will be granted.
What counts as declared vegetation
Council's vegetation chapter requires a permit before clearing declared vegetation, which includes any tree 3 m or taller, or one with a trunk diameter, measured 1.4 m above ground level, of 15 cm or more for a single-trunk tree.
A garden shrub below that line is not declared vegetation by that definition, which is worth knowing before a wall is set out through a garden bed.
Why a wall brings it up
A wall's footing and the cut behind it reach further than the wall's face. Where the job includes cut or fill excavation, the chapter asks for a report by a consulting arborist for a tree within 3 m of the work, or within 5 m if its trunk is more than 36 cm across, including a tree on neighbouring land.
The practical order is to ask about the tree before the wall is designed, because the answer can move the wall.
What to ask the provider
Ask whether a permit is needed, who applies, and whether the fee is in the quote. Council's page on its current fees is the one to read before you rely on this figure.
What could change
Council's fees are set for the financial year and Council can change any of its pages at any time. This one was read on 27 September 2026.
